Uxbridge Pocket Forests

Three New Pocket Forests Established in Uxbridge, ON

The King Street Parkette (located at 233 King Street West in Uxbridge, ON) has been transformed from a neglected site to three pocket forests. Pocket forests are small native tree and shrub plantings established using locally adapted techniques inspired by the Miyawaki method.

In June 2025, volunteers came together to prepare the three sites by laying down wetted cardboard, and thick layers of compost and mulch. Preparing the site in this way amends the soil to provide a rich planting area for the pocket forest to come.

Planting Day

On October 25, 2025 about 50 volunteers and community partners of all ages, picked up shovels and planted 600 native trees and shrubs into three 200 square metre pocket forests. These pocket forests have revitalized a sparse site and brought the community and neighbourhood together.

Thank you to all the volunteers who made this project happen!

This video, from Tree Canada, shines a light on the Uxbridge Pocket Forests project, the method behind the process and the community that come together to grow the biodiversity in their neighbourhood.

The Uxbridge pocket forest project is supported through funding from Tree Canada and the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority, and support from The Rotary Club of Uxbridge, The Township of Uxbridge, Little Forests Durham, Durham Region and UTS Tree Care.
